All of us have experienced pain at some point of time in our lives. Pain is the most common reason people seek medical attention. About 80 % of doctor visits are primarily due to some pain problem. It is subjective and very complex. The processes in the body that are involved in the perception of pain are called "nociception".

Feelings of pain are mild, severe and sometimes persistent. Pain can be either acute or chronic.

Pain includes diverse unpleasant sensations such as:

  • aching

  • tightness

  • burning

  • numbness

In 2000, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) published guidelines that included pain as the "fifth vital sign" which must be regularly assessed along with pulse, blood pressure, temperature and respiratory rate- the other four vital signs.

Pain Management

Pain management depends on the type and the severity of the pain. The management of pain can sometimes be very challenging, especially when dealing with persons who have cognitive impairment that affects their ability to understand and communicate. Effective pain relief should result in improved and effective functional activity.

Costs Associated with Pain

Pain has major physical and psychological impact on the person affected. Pain also has a major economic impact. It has been estimated that it costs as much as 61.2 billion dollars per year. Most of the productive time lost due to pain is due to reduced performance on the job rather than time away from the work.
